Earth Hour and biodiversity: Switch off your lights!

On Saturday, the 27th of March, will take place a very important event for our planet. It ‘s an international event worth mentioning. Every European citizen along with all citizens of the world are invited to switch off their lights during one hour from 8: 30 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m local time.

So, let’s do something for the planet on this blog and let’s show our concern.

Global warming/ Le réchauffement climatique

Of course, we owe it to  future generations but even today, global warming (caused mostly by the impact of human activity on our environment), causes many serious problems on the surface of the Earth. It is at the origin of natural disasters but also of a gradual disappearance of many animal species among other alarming threats.

2010 is the International year for Biodiversity. We shouldn’t forget it! Biodiversity means the variety and diversity of the living world, from plants to human beings, from bacteria to the largest mammals. It also means the diversity of landscapes . And all these living pieces form a giant interactive puzzle that we must do everything we can to preserve.

Keep in mind that one animal specie out of 1000 disappears each year from the face of the Earth!!!

To return to inland Brittany, one of the victims of human activity is the wolf, an animal in danger of extinction nowadays. The last wolf was seen in our countryside at the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately they were held responsible for many ills and were feared. They were hunted ruthlessly and many legends and stories were told about them. They nourished people’s imagination.  As a consequence, there aren’t any wolves left today in our region. Other species have also disappeared or are going to disappear (if we don’t react quickly) due to the action of man and climate change as well. I am thinking about the bees for example.  We’ll certainly touch upon this subject again soon.

Yes Isabelle, we will switch off elecrtricity on March 27th at 8.30p.m local time.

Great slide about our environment. May we be able to open up our youngsters’minds to eco-friendly actions to preserve our only home: our planet!

Thank you Marie for reminding me of adding an indication about local time. And I really believe the only way to change mentalities, to awake friendly attitudes to our planet is to help our youngsters to become aware of the necessity to develop actions to preserve it.

In Romania we have been honoring Earth Day for three years now and it is a very nice feeling to know that more than one billion people are doing the same thing at the same time, so as to preserve our planet and deliver it to our children as it should be: clean and unpolluted!!!

I think it is high-time we all took action before it is too late.

Nice wrapping for the material, so congrats Isabelle!!!

I agree with you completely, Mihaï!
It is at the same time very easy and very difficult to change our bad habits. But it is high time we took action and this blog is one more opportunity to make the young generations aware of the emergency.
I talked about Earth Hour very briefly today with some students and I realized they were not really aware of it. So, we have a mission there!
