St.Jacob’s church.
Drawing by Joanna Naczk
One of the oldest, but also one of the most valuable churches in Lębork. It is famous for its unique original style. The Gothic Church of St.Jacob, the Apostle was built in the mid-fifteenth century. It was destroyed and rebuilt twice, in the XVIIth century and during the years 1818-1822. It’s a three-aisled church with a Baroque altar and an ivory tabernacle. In the sacristy a unique vault has survived , as well as crystal…
Near the church is held the famous St. Jacob’s Fair. Its origins are dated back to medieval times. In the past it offered an opportunity for merchants and craftsmen to meet , now it is a place for cultural events, entertainment and shopping. At the bazaar you can buy folklore products. Tradition is also a rally of Jacobs, that is, of men who are called Jacobs.

Medieval city walls and Towers.
Photos: Mateusz Stolc
Lebork is one of the few cities in Pomerania, which has a well-preserved medieval city wall. Its construction began in 1341, and was finalized around the year 1363. Their total length was about 1220 meters. The fortifications had 32 towers, including the corner towers, two gates: Gdansk and Slupsk. The defensive wall was 6 m high . The walls were built of bricks and Polish Vedic thread. Some passages in the mundane parts were built with granite.
Extremely valuable, because it preserved the style, is the corner tower called the Bluszczowa Tower ( an integral part of the city walls). It was built during the city’s fortifications (1363). Its name derives from the fact that it was overgrown with thick ivy. In the winter of 1855 as a result of extremely severe cold, the ivy froze . Since then, only the name remained. The construction of this tower is different from the other towers forming part of the medieval city fortifications. At its base is a four-sided tower. From the second floor of its shape, it changed to octagonal. Covered with a pointed tile roof. The roof is crowned with a copper pin ball. The elevation is a characteristic pattern of bricks lębork’s fortification called zendrówki. Their dark color stands out, creating graphical themes.

Dear Polish friends
Your post is very interesting. However, I would like to see some images showing the church, the fortifications, the materials etc. Surfing in the Internet I found them extremely nice. Thank you!
Churchs in Lębork are so beautiful. Lębork has many old buildings and old tenement houses. I like Lębork very much.
Wioleta:-)
I see St.Jacob almost every day .
It’s beautiful.
We have real artist ( s) here and Lębork was a great source of inspiration. I like the contrast between te church and the city walls. Well done the unknown artist(s)!
Beautiful drawings! Thank you! I agree though that some photos of St Jacob’s church would be nice too. I learnt a lot about this church and it’s indeed very interesting as far as architecture and history are concerned!
Dear Marie,
it is my fault, I did not tell you who are the artists…
Well the drawing of St. Jacob’s was made by Joanna Naczk, and the other one was made by Monika Żdanuk.
I will write it in the article…
Thank you so much
I wish to congratulate you for these very good drawings!
We are really glad you like our work. Thank you …
Your post is just professional with photos, drawings and text. Well done and congratulations to Joanna Naczk and Monika Żdanuk, two revealed artists
Orastie, my city is built all around a medieval fortress.Inside the fortress is the church.Today the fortress walls hardly see due to new buildings.
Your photos give us a very good idea of what the church and the fortifications look like in addition to your drawings of course! I can see that your drawings are really good too when I look at the photos!
Just a translation of Isabelle Boucher’s comment which is a specialist’s comment as Isabelle teaches Art in our school.
“A beautiful baroque church and a beautiful drawing with a diffuse light coming from the sky like a representation of the divine light. I also notice the stained glass windows (during the next schoolyear (2010-2009) we will do some research on stained-glass windows. Many artists worked on stained-glass windows: Pierre Soulages, Marc Chagall, Matisse….)”
Merci Isabelle pour ta contribution toujours intéressante.
