The Hunyad Castle (Romanian: Castelul Huniazilor or Castelul Corvineştilor, Hungarian: Vajdahunyad vára) is a castle in present-day Hunedoara, Romania. It is located 20 km from my hometown, Orastie.
Le château d’Hunyad, situé en Hunedoara, Roumanie, se trouve à 20 km de ma ville, Orastie.
It is a relic of the Hunyadi dynasty. In the 14th century, the castle was given to a Vlach (Romanian) knyaz Serb, or Sorb by Sigismund king of Hungary as severance. The castle was restored between 1446 and 1453 by his grandson Iancu de Hunedoara (John Hunyadi). It was built in Gothic style, but has Baroque and Renaissance architectural elements. It features tall and strong defence towers, an interior yard and a drawbridge. Built in the 14th century, on the site of an old fortification, on a rock below which flows the small river Zlasti, the castle is a large building, with high and diversely coloured roofs, towers, windows and balconies adorned with carvings in stone.
Being one of the most important properties of John Hunyadi, the castle was transformed during his ruling. It became a sumptuous home, not only a strategically enforced point. With the passing of the years, the masters of the castle had modified its appearance, adding towers, halls and guest rooms. The gallery and the keep – the last defence tower (called “Ne boisa” = Do not be afraid), which remained unchanged from Iancu de Hunedoara’s time, and the Capistrano Tower (named after the francescan monk from the castle court) are some of the most significant parts of the construction. Other significant parts of the building are the Knights’ Hall (a great reception hall), the Club Tower, the White bastion, which served as a food storage room, and the Diet Hall, on whose walls medallions are painted (among them there are the portraits of Matei Basarab, ruler from Wallachia, and Vasile Lupu, ruler of Moldavia). In the wing of the castle called the Mantle, a painting can be seen which portrays the legend of the raven from which the name of the descendants of John Hunyadi, Corvinus came.
Etant l’une des propriétés les plus importantes de John Hunyadi, le château fut converti durant son règne en une résidence somptueuse tout en conservant ses fonctions défensives et sa position stratégique.
In the castle yard, near the chapel built also during John Hunyadi’s ruling, is a well 30 meters deep. The legend says that this fountain was dug by three Turkish prisoners to whom liberty was promised if they reached water. After 15 years they completed the well, but their captors did not keep their promise. It is said that the inscription on a wall of the well means “you have water, but not soul”. Specialists, however, have translated the inscription as “he who wrote this inscription is Hasan, who lives as slave of the giaours, in the fortress near the church”.
In February 2007, Hunyad Castle played host to the British paranormal television program Most Haunted Live! for a three-night live investigation into the spirits purported to be haunting the castle.

This castle is quite impressive!
Did the poor Turkish prisoners stay in prison for the rest of their lives?
Thanks Marinela for this information about Hunyad castle. I like the gallery on the photo very much and the high, elegant pointed roofs as well.
The castle is laid out in a very different way as our castles. It looks typically Romanian to me in architectural style.
What impressed me most is the 30m deep well and the 15 years needed to dig it! Wow!
And the gothic style of the inside is a real architectural marvel!
Thanks for sharing Marinela.
I forgot to ask you a question: What was the conclusion of the televised investigation into the spirits haunting the castle?
This is a great slide! I could see that some celebration take place there. It must be fantastic to attend the shows and concerts there! Have you already attended one?
Dear Marinela
I am speechless after having seen this amazing castle. You transferred us in a legendary place but still alive with all those activities held there! I loved the little “bridge of sighs” but also the beautiful costumes of old times! Is it possible for a couple to get married there? Very Romantic indeed, if they are not afraid of the ghosts there!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much for sharing the beauty of this architectural beauty.
Great slide show. I like the pics of this castle and the medieval feast :the people in disguise speak to my imagination. I wouldn’t like to be trapped in the castle at night though!
.
Each year Castle Days are celebrated here. In this medieval celebration the old times are revived. You can listen to medieval music, the courtyard is full of medieval dancers. Here come actors from all regions of the country, even from abroad. There are also many movies, here.Isabelle does not know which was the conclusion of the English TV programme, but we are not afraid to spend the night in this castle.A Romanian prince, Vlad Tepes, better known by the nickname of Dracula, spent some time in this castle. For this reason some call it Dracula’s castle along with Bran Castle and the Poienari citadel.
These photos are very beautiful.
