The lake of the Drennec is an artificial lake created in1981. It measures 113 hectars and is a reserve for trouts.

The water, which is pure, is fed by the Elorn River and the Mougau river. There is a rich vegetation and fauna and it is a paradise for fishing.

The lake ends with a dam which makes it possible to supply Brest area in water. The draught of 1976 highlighted the difficulties of supplying drinkable water to the population of North Finistère (including Brest, Landerneau and Landivisiau)

A nautical center enables people to practise swimming, sailing and nautical activities on the lake. A hiking path goes around the lake too.

The Unicorn

When she comes, she grows blacker and blacker until it has the color of a crow. She rushes at the traveller and she pierces him with her horn. Then he turns into a ghost and the unicorn gives him 12 hours to perform 12 very good actions. If he succeeds, the unicorn turns white again and leaves.

Here is what happened to Loïc. He had refused to help his parents in the fields and they died there of exhaustion and old age. Because of his pride he refused to admit that it was his fault. One day, he met the unicorn but he only did three good actions: he had helped an old woman cross the road, he had painted a fresco for kids, and he had returned a lost dog to its owner. The unicorn, who was furious about Loïc’s laziness, abandoned him to his fate, until another evil-looking person passes by. He is still in the forest and at noon, every day, you can hear the sound of the unicorn’s hooves.

The Locmaria-Berrien Mine is in Locmaria-Berrien, near Huëlgoat. It’s a silver and lead mine. The mine was in operation intensely for 137 years, starting in 1741. Two thousand four hundred people worked and lived in this industry. It was the biggest mine in the Kingdom in the 18th century. Today the formidable machines are all definitely shut down , with only the ruins testifying to this important Breton industrial patrimony.

In France and in Brittany, from the 1st to the 7th of April, many actions will be led to promote sustainable development. Schools, companies, associations and visit centers like ” La Maison de l’Eau et de la Rivière” in Sizun and “Les Moulins de Kerouat” , an eco museum in Commana in the Monts d’Arrée, will take part in this event by organising conferences and guided visits on different topics like water resources, biodiversity (with the Group of Mammalogy, interested in preserving many mammal species among which endangered species, in Brittany). Many initiatives in favour of our environment will be rewarded by a Trophy.

On the 12th of April we (26 students from the European class and their Science, English teachers and librarian) will go on a visit of the “Maison de l’eau et de la rivière” and the folk museum “Moulins de Kerouat” as well as a visit of a traditional Breton house and the Parish Close of Plounéour-Ménez. We’ll have the opportunity to talk and learn about biodiversity and aquatic environments and water as well as Breton history. And our students will share their newly acquired knowledge and their experience with you on this blog.

17 Mar
I should be thinking about my work, but all my thoughts are for a people thousands of miles away. I hurt so much inside for these people I have never known, from a place I have never been. All the fear, hurt and sorrow they must have, losing so many they loved. Great towns and villages washed away in a few minutes.
I feel ashamed that my physical life remains unchanged today, though my emotions are devastated. Though we are different, we are the same. I would like to reach out to these people, but I have nothing to offer. How do you say, “Everything will be OK.”
